A Pennsylvania Family's Journey to Finding the Right Cyber Charter School
For many families across Pennsylvania, the COVID-19 pandemic changed the way they viewed education. Traditional schools faced unexpected closures, parents were forced to make quick decisions, and students suddenly had to adapt to online learning environments that many districts were not prepared to deliver.
For Tyler's family, that moment became the beginning of a life-changing educational journey.
Now an 8th-grade student at Reach Cyber Charter School, Tyler has found a learning environment where he can thrive academically, socially, and personally. His family says the flexibility, support, and individualized approach at Reach have made all the difference.
From Uncertainty to Confidence in Cyber Education
When the pandemic disrupted traditional education, Tyler's family knew they needed to explore other options.
"During COVID, brick and mortar was not prepared for the outbreak and closure of their schools," Tyler's caretaker shared. "Decisions had to be made, choices and educated guesses as to the future of our child were front and center."
Like many Pennsylvania families searching for a better fit, they researched online learning opportunities, listened to recommendations from other parents, and explored the standards held by cyber charter schools.
Initially, the family tried private school, but it quickly became clear that it was not the right environment for Tyler.
Then a family member, whose own children were already enrolled at Reach Cyber Charter School, recommended it. Hearing about their positive experiences gave the family the confidence to explore something new.
Tyler enrolled in 2023 as a 5th-grade student, and his family says they immediately noticed the difference.
Why Reach Cyber Charter School Was the Best Fit
Tyler's family believes that education is not one-size-fits-all. They wanted a school that would provide strong academics while also supporting Tyler's unique personality and learning style.
"Every teacher, administrator, family mentor, and staff member is held to the highest standard," they shared. "That commitment is passed on to our students, allowing them to learn in the best possible way for them."
For Tyler, flexibility has been especially important. Naturally shy, he has discovered opportunities to participate and engage in ways that may have been difficult in a traditional classroom setting.
"He goes to almost all the meet-and-greets," his caretaker explained. "He has signed up for things he wouldn't have done at a regular school because he has the flexibility of when to speak up and get involved."
This personalized environment has helped Tyler build confidence while still allowing his family to remain actively involved in his education.
"They advocate for the kids, but the caretakers still have control over everything."
The Importance of School Choice in Pennsylvania
Tyler's family is also passionate about protecting educational choice for Pennsylvania students and families.
During advocacy conversations with lawmakers, Tyler's caretaker emphasized how important cyber charter schools are for families like theirs.
"I'm hoping these legislators don't take our choice away," she shared.
She also encouraged leaders to continue supporting educational options for families throughout the state, saying, "I hope you can advocate for choice."
For many parents, cyber charter schools provide flexibility, personalized learning, and educational opportunities that may not be available in traditional settings. Families can choose the environment that best supports their child's academic success, emotional well-being, and personal growth.
Tyler's family believes that choice matters because every child learns differently.
"Everyone is different...we don't all go to the same grocery store, the car dealership, the same doctor, the same dentist, the same ice cream shop! We go where we get the best service, the best guidance, the best choices, the best variety. That is why we chose Reach. It has been the best for us."
