With just a couple of tools and one board, your family can work together to create a DIY bird box. Building your own bird house is a great activity to do with your family. Older children can help with measuring and cutting with a saw. Younger children can practice using a hammer. It is also a great STEM activity. STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. A DIY building project includes both engineering and math while being engaging and fun!

• Gather your supplies
  • Collect Materials
    • 1 board 3/4" x 3.5" x 40"
    • 13 nails
  • Collect Tools
    • 1 hammer
    • 1 1-inch drill bit
    • Drill
    • Tape measure or ruler
    • Square
    • Pencil
    • Saw
    • Two clamps
• Measure and cut six pieces from your board. These will be your Front, Back, Top, Bottom, and Sides.
• Measure and drill the hole for your bird to enter.
• Nail the pieces together
• Congratulations you have completed your birdbox!

Reach's comprehensive Career Readiness programs are designed to help them explore interests, build real-world skills, and step confidently into their future, and the career exploration begins in kindergarten with career kits and events.

Carpentry is just one of many Career Course Programs offered to students. Students of all ages at Reach have the opportunity to join our carpentry instructor at an in-person event to build a more detailed version of the bird box above! This camp allows students to explore carpentry as a possible career. High School students can then join the Carpentry Course Program which equips high school students with woodworking and construction skills through hands-on, comprehensive coursework.
